Half the front is embossed in a scallop that repeats like fish scale, and the other half is left plain. That contrast is the whole design, and it is why the bag reads as considered rather than as one more smooth rectangle. Across the back there is a zip pocket the full width of the bag. That is where a phone goes when you want it reachable without opening the main compartment in the middle of a market. It holds its shape, and the sides flare out towards the top, so the opening is wider than the base and reaching in stays easy even when the bag is full.
